Given a patient ride by Nigel Hawke, Seagram picked up the Gold Cup winner 100 yards from the lollipop and stretched away to record a historic win, his tenth under rules. However, ths was to be the last time he past the winning post in front. He went on to come close to winning the Whitbread, and in 1992′s National found the 12lb rise in weights too much to burden. His gradually began to tail off and he lived in retirement until the age of 17 before succumbing to colic.

The race, sponsored by Canadian drinks firm Seagram since 1984 was in its final year of supporting the race and welcome publicity was gained through sharing a name with the winning horse.

The UK company chairman, Ivan Straker had twice refused to purchase the horse in recent years and his fate was to present the trophy to winning owner Sir Eric Parker.
